About

I painted a lot throughout my childhood, a little less during adolescence. When I started high school, I just stopped. I can’t remember the exact moment it happened or whether there was any thought process behind it. I just remember being so fixated on getting good grades and making it to my dream journalism program that I completely buried this side of myself.

Some amazing things have happened in the 17 years since I became an adult. I graduated from Columbia Journalism School, which remains one of the most exciting years of my life so far.

Over the past decade, as a business and financial journalist, I’ve contributed to MergermarketBalkanInsightVogue PolskaUnquote, and MIT Sloan Management Review Polska, among other publications.

You can see my full portfolio here.

Most recently, I have been focused on a book project exploring young people’s relationship with money, particularly the impact of technology on their financial stability (contract with Columbia University Press). My initial business book proposal was shortlisted for the Financial Times’ Bracken Bower Prize.

I also run a women-centered platform, W Insight, where I feature role models from around the world. I serve as Editor-in-Chief.

Leaders I’ve interviewed so far include Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Belarusian political activist; Stacey Abrams, American politician, writer, and activist; Pulitzer Prize winner and playwright Martyna Majok; and Gossip Girl star Zuzanna Szadkowska, among many others.

During the pandemic, I began painting again. What started as a hobby and an emotional release has now become an extension of my journalism. In my art, I often reference historical, widely known paintings, but I add a contemporary layer. Through painting, I comment on current issues through the lens of younger generations (Gen Y, Gen Z).

I created this website to showcase some of my art. I hope it marks the start of a new chapter for me: not only as a writer, but also as a visual storyteller.

Please see one of my favorite paintings so far, “Breakfast of Millennials,” inspired by Renoir’s “Breakfast of the Rowers.” The painting is already in someone’s hands, but please see my art portfolio for more of my work.

Joanna Socha: “Breakfast of Millennials” #MakeLatteCheapAgain, 90x64cm, oil on canvas. March 2025. Painting not available.
